Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has long been regarded as Africa’s Jewel. It is one of Africa’s best safari destinations, with the Big Five promised to rekindle your passion for the continent.  Zimbabwe safaris are unparalleled!

Zimbabwe has national parks in all four corners of the country.  These national parks showcase Zimbabwe’s natural wonders.  The mighty Zambezi River runs from the north, near the Zambian border. The area is home to not only Victoria Falls, perhaps Africa’s most popular natural wonder, but also Mana Pools National Park and Matusadona National Parks.

The idyllic riverine ecosystem of Mana Pools hosts a vast variety of predator and prey species, including hippo and crocodiles. From elephant to waterbuck and Cape buffalo The grassy plains that abut Lake Kariba in Matusadona National Park attract an equally impressive list of big game animals.

The granite boulders of Matobo National Park can be found in the drier southern regions.  In addition, the centuries-old Great Zimbabwe ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At about 15,000 km2, Hwange National Park, the country’s largest national park, is located to the west.  Starting as a game reserve in 1928, it was upgraded in 1949 to a National Park. Hwange’s habitats alternate between grassland, mopane forests, and semi-desert. Together these draw massive elephant populations as well as lion, leopard, and rhino to its waterholes.

The best Zimbabwe safaris combine Victoria Falls, Mana Pools National Park, Matobo National Park and Hwange National Park.

Best time to visit Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is an excellent place for those who want to get off the beaten path. Whilst Victoria Falls (Mosi o a Tunya) is at its most spectacular between February and July, Zimbabwe’s safari season runs from June through to October. High temperatures can be uncomfortable in October, with the rains starting around November. Thunderstorms and rain are common in the early part of the year, a fantastic time for birders.
