Ndutu Safari Lodge
Ndutu Safari Lodge oozes history. Ndutu has retained its cherished status as a gem of the Serengeti plains since it was created by George Dove in 1968 as the first permanent camp in the area. George gave up hunting and transformed the lodge into his regular campsite prizing its wild and remote location in the midst of game and surrounding the Serengeti plains and Ndutu was born. To this day, Ndutu Safari Lodge remains Tanzania’s oldest safari lodge.
Over the years, Ndutu Safari Lodge has became a favorite stopover for many distinguished authors, photographers, filmmakers, wildlife biologists, and other interesting personalities.
Technically, the lodge lies on the northern border of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area but essentially offers a Serengeti experience. The wildebeest migration passes through this area, usually between December and April, when the rains have made the plains lush and green.
Between February and March, the Ndutu area is host to the calving cycle of the wildebeest migration. Pregnant wildebeest give birth and some 8,000 baby wildebeest are being born every day. Thousands of zebras and gazelles who have accompanied the wildebeest on their annual trek take advantage of safety in numbers to drop their young too. The big cats – lions, leopards, and cheetahs – stalk the southern Serengeti along with hyenas and black-backed jackals.  Your chance of seeing predator-prey interaction and a kill are very high during the wildebeest calving season.
Nestled in the gorgeous southern Serengeti (Ngorongoro Conservation Area), Ndutu Safari Lodge is a classic safari hideaway renowned for its great wildlife encounters and close proximity to the Great Migration. With just 34 stone cabins, the lodge presents a quiet and intimate setting. Every cottage is made to fit the surroundings, with private views of the Ndutu plains—ideal for viewing local wildlife straight from your house. Built from locally sourced stone and thatch material, all cottages are naturally cool thanks to their thick walls offering stylish and cosy lodging. Every room features a sink, flushing toilet and hot shower en suite bathroom. The lodge provides meals with the freshest locally grown foods, so providing the ideal mix of traditional African tastes with foreign cuisine. Acacia Spa & Gym presents to the visitors unmatched experiences.
More than just a place to stay, Ndutu Safari Lodge is a portal to some of the most fascinating animal encounters available on Earth. Every moment at Ndutu Safari Lodge is remarkable, whether you’re seeing a lion chasing its prey or the amazing migrating herds on route.
