This dynamic wilderness is a sweeping expanse of savannah brooded over by several rocky outcrops that guard a relic marsh and the dry channel once its lifeline. The Savute goes through wet and dry cycles, where wild dogs hunt in the dry river channel where crocodiles swam only twenty years ago. Visitors to this spectacular area can spot abundant wildlife, including a variety of birds, elephants, antelope, lion pride, black-backed jackal, bat-eared foxes, tsessebe, kudu, hyena, cheetah Cape buffalo herds, and thousands of migrating zebra and wildebeest.

On a Fully Serviced Safari, guests stay in spacious dome tents (3m x 3m x 1.95m) which all have a private en suite bush toilet and shower. Camp beds with all the bedding are provided. This safari does not require any participation from guests. A back-up team traveling in a separate vehicle with all the equipment will set up the camp before guests arrive and break camp once guests have left. Guests travel in a custom-built safari vehicle. All safari vehicles are specially designed to offer optimum comfort and maximize game viewing and photographic opportunities for the guests. Each vehicle has been designed to seat 16 guests but takes a maximum of 9 during Fully Serviced camping Safaris, which ensures excellent game viewing and mobility, and guarantees a window seat to each passenger. Entirely removable side windows along with folding windscreen and canvas roofs enhance game viewing opportunities. 220V/2 pin (round) power points are available on the vehicle to recharge cameras along with a small fridge to ensure guests can enjoy cool drinks at all times. On rainy days or if the air is chilly, perspex windows can be slid on both sides of the vehicle, to simultaneously protect perfectly from the weather while allowing a completely unobstructed sight.

For the Semi Participation safaris, guests are only required to pitch and fold their own tent. All cooking, cleaning and any other camp chores are taken care of by your safari team, made up of an experienced local safari guide and a camp assistant. We provide 2.1m x 2.1m x 1.75m dome tents and a comfortable 5cm high density foam mattress. We mostly camp in areas with no formal ablutions, and therefore build our own bush toilet and shower when camping in these areas. Guests travel in a custom-built safari vehicle. To ensure a private and relaxing environment, Savute Safari Lodge accommodates just twenty four guests in eleven thatched chalets built of local timber and one family room which consists of two double bedrooms. The chalets, which have been elegantly furnished in calm neutral tones to blend with the natural environment, feature expansive private decks, a combined bedroom and lounge area and en suite facilities. Savute Safari Lodge offers a shaded viewing deck, an al fresco dining area and swimming pool with spectacular pool loungers – ideal for watching the varied wildlife – including the resident Elephants – as they make their way to the Channel to drink, bathe and play.

Activities are organised around game drives throughout the Savute area in open 4x4 safari vehicles. Many trips will incorporate a visit to the Savute Marsh to give you a chance to see the historic presence of the Savute Channel at the marsh against a backdrop of teeming wildlife.

The tents are 4 x 3m Sahara style tents with high roof with a 2 x 3m en-suite bathroom and a 2 x 3m covered area in front of the tent. The tents are fitted with solid base camp beds made up with mattresses, sheets, duvets and pillows. The tents have en-suite long drop toilet facilities and a bucket shower at the rear of the tent. Showers can be ordered as hot, cold or warm and the water is heated in a bucket on the fire. Showers may be taken at any time but on Kalahari safaris the guide withholds the right to limit water use and showering depending upon the availability of water. Both hand towels and bath towels are supplied for the guests’ convenience but please note that guests should bring their own personal items and toiletries. Each tent has an oil/paraffin lamp on the veranda and in the bathroom and within the tent itself, a LED rechargeable camp light is supplied along with a side table in the sleeping area and in the bathroom. Although each tent has lighting and there are lamps strategically around the camp for navigation, an essential tool for your safari is a headlamp which lets you read a book at night in your tent or catch up with your safari journal as you listen to the sounds of the wild outside! If you don’t buy it from us make sure you buy it from someone and take our advice – don’t pack the free headlamp you got at the supermarket with your battery purchase. Spending a little bit of money will save you a lot of frustration. If you are travelling as a couple then pack one per person.

Recognised as a prime game viewing area, the Savuti covers almost 1,930 sq. miles (5,000 square km) in the south west of Chobe National Park. Parts of Savuti are almost desert-like with a scorching sun and hot sand, while at the other extreme are vast grassy plains.Savuti is well known for its elephants, lions and hyenas, all of which visit the lodge area, making for an experience not to be forgotten! Listening to the night sounds of Savuti is an unforgettable experience. Apart from being one of Africa’s prime game viewing areas, Savuti is also stunningly beautiful, with rocky outcrops, and rolling grassland interspersed with dead trees. In 2009 the Savuti channel began flowing again – the first time in 30 years. In February 2010 the channel had reached the marsh, transforming the area and bringing new life. The Savuti area is now returning to its former glory – when it was known as one of the key wildlife areas in Botswana.This campsite offers large camping sites with running water (not drinking water) on every campsite. In the centre of the campsite is an elephant proof complex which houses the ablutions, showers and washing basins.
