9-day Classic Southern Tanzania (Standard)

Tanzania’s southern parks of Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park are worth serious consideration and are the preferred destination for most who are really keen on their safari. The benefits of heading to the south is that, where the very north of the Serengeti gives the numbers of game, along with some seclusion, the southern parks are still very much “frontier” parks and so are noticeably less busy.

Day 2 : Ruaha National Park

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your light aircraft flight to Ruaha National Park—one of Tanzania's largest parks, boasting diverse landscapes and an abundance of wildlife. Transfer to Mdonya Old River Camp, located on the banks of the Great Ruaha River, and set out on a safari drive amid the grassy plains and scrub woodlands of this remote reserve.  Spot herds of elephant and buffalo; keep an eye out for the park’s resident predators; and learn about local conservation efforts from our guides. Relax this evening by a bonfire at your lodge.

Day 3 – 4 : Ruaha National Park

Enjoy 2 days of activities.  Game drives are flexible and not limited by any schedule.  Guests get a chance to see the breathtaking mosaic of ecosystems, from the river pools to the acacia grasslands and wooden forests.  There are Baobab valleys and sand rivers fringed with Hyphaene petersiana palms. Monolithic granite boulders dating from the formation of the Great Rift Valley and exposed by erosion litter the area.  Enjoy every second of the beauty of Ruaha with Mdonya’s bush breakfasts, bush lunches and sundowners, on a open game viewing vehicle!

Day 5 : Nyerere National Park

Following the morning activity (time permitting) and breakfast, you will be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Selous Game Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Crisscrossed by rivers and covered in dense woodland, this pristine reserve is home to large concentrations of big-tusked elephants and majestic lions. After settling into our camp, hop on a boat for a river safari down the Rufiji—one of Tanzania’s longest rivers—and observe the plethora of creatures that frequent its shores.

Day 6 – 8 : Nyerere National Park

Enjoy 3 days of game-viewing activities, which includes game drives, game walks and boating.

Game Drive - Game safaris take place in 4×4 vehicles which usually take 4 guests (except for airstrip transfers, when there may be up to 6 guests).
The drives are not limited to a specific schedule but tailor-made to guests’ wishes.  Game drives can be in the morning, or in the afternoon, or for a full day.
Departure times for the drives can usually be arranged according to your preferences

Walking - A walk with an armed ranger and an informative guide is a rewarding experience and a great way to get closer to the beauty of the Selous. Walking safaris can be arranged either in the early morning or the late afternoon.  Generally the early morning is the coolest time of the day. Walkers leave after a cup of tea/coffee, and eat breakfast on their return to camp. The walk usually lasts for about 2 hours, and can cover up to 3 km in the area around the camp.

Boating - There are two possibilities: either onto Lake Manze or along a channel that runs from the Lake to the Rufiji River (although it is too far to reach the river itself).  In either direction you can expect to see hippo, crocodile, maybe other animals coming to drink, and about 40 species of birds. Some birds, like osprey, are more likely to be seen on the lake; others, like white-fronted bee eaters, are more numerous on the channel.
