Often overlooked by the many safari offerings in Northern Safari Circuit, Tanzania’s southern parks of the Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park are a preferred destination for most travellers who are really keen on their safari; particularly for those who are returning to Africa for their second or more safari. The benefits of heading to the south is that, where the very north of the Serengeti gives the numbers of game, along with some seclusion, the southern parks are still very much “frontier” parks and so are noticeably less busy.

Full Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 : Dar es Salaam

On arrival into Dar es Salaam Airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

Day 2 : Ruaha National Park

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your light aircraft flight to Ruaha National Park—one of Tanzania's largest parks, boasting diverse landscapes and an abundance of wildlife. Transfer to Ruaha River lodge, located on the banks of the Great Ruaha River, and set out on a safari drive amid the grassy plains and scrub woodlands of this remote reserve. Spot herds of elephant and buffalo; keep an eye out for the park’s resident predators; and learn about local conservation efforts from our guides. Relax this evening by a bonfire at your lodge.

Day 3 – 4 : Ruaha National Park

Enjoy 2 days of activities. All game drives around the park are taken in open 4 wheel drive vehicles. These vehicles have been designed to ensure maximum visibility for all passengers. All have 2 way radio in case of emergency. The game drives are led by a trained, experienced English speaking guide who will ensure that you get the most out of every safari you make.

Day 5 : Nyerere National Park

Following the morning activity (time permitting) and breakfast, you will be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Selous Game Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Crisscrossed by rivers and covered in dense woodland, this pristine reserve is home to large concentrations of big-tusked elephants and majestic lions. After settling into our camp, hop on a boat for a river safari down the Rufiji—one of Tanzania’s longest rivers—and observe the plethora of creatures that frequent its shores.

Day 6 – 8 : Nyerere National Park

Enjoy 3 days of game-viewing activities, which includes game drives, game walks and boating. All game drives are taken in open vehicles with a sun shade roof, so there are no impediments to anyone's view. Guides at Rufiji are locally trained and are experts in the Selous area. A game walk at Rufiji will really open your eyes to the finer details often missed on game drives - the spore, footprints, the 'little five' representing the insect Kingdom are fascinating when evaluated and explained by your walking guide. Boating is done in flat bottomed boats are perhaps the most relaxing way to game view. Sharing the river with pods of hippo and floats of crocodiles giving you the opportunity to view birds nesting in the banks, monitor lizards and many water birds are just some of the highlights.
