7-day Waterberg Lodge Horse Safari

Here are two lovely lodges, Ant's Hill and Ant's Nest, based on a private game reserve located in the Waterberg region of the Limpopo province in the northern part of South Africa.  They are luxurious yet still retain a rustic charm which in turn creates an informal and relaxing atmosphere. The riding itinerary is very flexible and can be arranged every morning and afternoon. Or there are other options if you want to mix things around, like game drives, guided walks, guided mountain biking, or just relaxing my the pool. The reserve now boasts a successfully breeding population of white rhino, buffalo, magnificent sable antelope and a vast variety of other game. Any ability of rider can stay here and rides will generally be arranged so that similar ability riders will go out together, or family groups. Children and non-riders are very welcome and well catered for.

Please Note: Longer or shorter stays are available, please call us for details.

Both lodges have 3 levels of room type. You can stay at either Ant's Hill or Ant's Nest or have a combination of time at both,  please call for details:

Day 1 - Johannesburg to the Lodge
Lunch | Dinner

Please note that the riding activites here are very flexible and therefore this is just a suggested itinerary. You guides will discuss with you how you would like to spend each day and tailor your safari accordingly.

You will be meet at OR Thambo Johannesburg International Airport and transfered by road to the lodge (approximately 3.5 hrs).  You will be shown to your room and then depending on your time of arrival sit down for lunch or afternoon tea.  Then set off on your first introductory ride to familiarise yourself with the tack, terrain and style of riding. Perhaps come accross giraffe and zebra on your ride.  Return to the lodge for showers and dinner.

Day 2 - Bush Brunch Ride
Fully Inclusive

Set off early this morning to see what you can find in the bush,  Be it the rhino, sable antelope, impala, warthogs or the elusive buffalo.  Stop in the bush for a brunch style bush breakfast.  Untack the horses who can then wander off and graze.  Return to the lodge for a swin or sietsa and ride again in the afternoon.  Or perhaps take a walk or drive with one of the guides.  Return to the lodge for dinner

Day 3 - Lodge Ride
Fully Inclusive

This morning set off for a long morning ride across the reserve over to the other lodge.  Stop there for a quick drink then head back for lunch.   This afternoon perhaps try out the mountain bike or have a go at fishing in the dam.  Dinner again at the lodge, but never in the same place twice!

Day 4 - Mountains Ride
Fully Inclusive

This morning head up into the mountains looking out got Mountain Reedbuck and oryx.  The views are amazing and see if you can spot the roof of the lodge far off in the distance.  Lunch will be up in the mountains today so once again untack the horses so they can meander back on their own.  After lunch return to the lodge in the vehicle and perhaps get some great photos of the Rhino.

Ride again in the afternoon, or perhaps take a night game drive to look for bush babies and spring hares.

Day 5 - Swiming the horses
Fully Inclusive

Arise a little later this morning and take a gentle ride down through the plains where zebra, wilderbeest and giraffe can often be found.  At the end of the ride, as the sun is getting hotter take the horses into the dam for a splash and a swim.  Return to the lodge for lunch.

This afternoon, ride up high into the mountains for sundowners - let the horses go home, while you sit and sip a Gin and Tonic watching that huge orange sun disappear below the horizon.  A short night drive back to the lodge for dinner.

Day 6 - Visit to bush camp
Fully Inclusive

This morning perhaps take a day off riding and head over to the bush camp to see the bushman paintings and swim in the river.  Lunch is cooked over the fire and served on the rocks overlooking the river. After that take a game walk in the afternoon. Returning later to the main lodge for dinner.

Day 7 - Final ride and transfer back to Johannesburg
Breakfast | Lunch

This morning is your last chance to track the game from horseback.  Perhaps one last canter up the airstrip and then head back to the lodge for your farewell brunch.  Transfer back to Johannesburg Airport.
