14-day Under the Stars of Tanzania and Kenya

On this 14-day Under the Stars of Tanzania and Kenya camping safari you will experience it all! From fantastic wildlife to impressive landscapes and meeting the local people. In Tanzania, you will visit the highlights of the northern circuit such as the Tarangire National Park, Lake Natron, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.  Unique to this safari is the “off the beaten track” trip to Lake Natron, offering you a real sense of adventure.

In Kenya you stay on private wildlife conservancies and experience the same high-quality wildlife safari experience provided by the top-end safari camps, with 4WD game viewing escorted by top class guides and in exclusive wildlife conservancies away from the tourist minibuses, but at a hugely reduced price by staying in small basic adventure camps, “real camping” instead of the luxury accommodation of the expensive up-market tented lodges. The camps are sited in private wildlife conservancies with a wealth of wildlife and where you can go on walks with Maasai guides and take night drives but they are also conveniently located for easy access to Amboseli National Park and the Masai Mara Reserve.

The beauty of being in a private conservancy is that the camps are not governed by the national park/game reserve rules, which are quite restrictive. Hence, our guides can drive off road, do night drives and you can also walk with your Masai guides – which you cannot do in the national parks/game reserves. The private conservancies border the national parks/game reserves so the animals can roam freely between the two, however the public cannot, thus creating a more private safari experience away from the sometimes maddening crowds. Full Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 : Tarangire National Park

After a short briefing in the morning you will head off in direction of the Tarangire National Park. The park with its savannah, baobab trees, seasonal swamps and lagoons is home to huge elephant herds. Animals gather at the life-giving Tarangire River and you should see a selection of mammals ranging from giraffes, bushbucks and hartebeests to the weird-looking gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx. The park is also home to buffaloes, zebras and wildebeests which are always closely followed by a range of predators such as lions. Leopards are seen now and then but cheetahs are rarely spotted. From the open roof of the safari vehicle you will be able to absorb the landscape and watch the animals. In the late afternoon you will leave the park and head to a nearby campsite, where you will spend the night in a tent.  Lunch; Dinner

Day 2 : Lake Natron

After breakfast you will leave the area around Tarangire National Park and head to the multicultural village of Mto wa Mbu. From here you will travel on a spectacular and very bumpy gravel road along the Rift Valley Escarpment with Ol Doinyo Lengai “the holy mountain” of the Masai in the distance. Today’s destination is the beautiful Maasai village of Ngare Sero, an oasis in the hot and dusty Rift Valley. In the distance you will notice a pink glow from thousands of flamingos breeding and feeding on the algae of the alkaline Lake Natron. In the afternoon you will join a Maasai guide on a walk to a nearby waterfall before you return to the campsite for your overnight.  Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 3 : Seronera

After an early start, you will travel along adventurous dirt tracks with breath-taking views as your vehicle climbs out of the Rift Valley to reach the grassy plains of the Serengeti by midday. Serengeti means “endless plains” in the language of the Maasai and you will see the grassland savannah stretching to the horizon. The Serengeti is the most famous park in Tanzania and it is home to the largest animal migration on the planet – hundreds of thousands of animals, trek to find fresh grass and water. You will overnight at a campsite in the northern or central part of the park.  Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 4 : Seronera

The entire day is dedicated to game viewing in the Serengeti National Park. You will either go on a full day game drive or join early morning and afternoon drives in the Seronera area, depending on last night’s stop. Between December and May huge herds of wildebeests and zebras will be seen, with calves and foals being born between January and March. The Seronera area is also the best place to spot the shy and nocturnal leopard. You will spend the night at a campsite in the Seronera area.  Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 5 : Ngorongoro Crater

The morning is set aside for another game drive in the Serengeti and you might spot some creatures that you haven’t seen yet. Animals tend to be more active in the morning before the temperatures soar around midday. After lunch, you will leave the plains of the Serengeti and travel to the highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You will camp at a campsite directly on the Ngorongoro Crater’s edge with a view over the collapsed volcano. It is a perfect spot to enjoy a sundowner at sunset.  Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 6 : Mto Wa Mbu

Rise and shine! It is up at daybreak to take on the steep path leading down into the 600 m deep crater. The slopes are forested but soon the landscape changes to savannah with the occasional acacia tree here and there. The wildlife in the crater is just breath-taking and with a little luck you might see the Big Five – lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. You should also see warthogs, wildebeests, zebras, hippos and some of the more than 500 bird species of the area. After an entire morning of game viewing and a picnic lunch in the crater, you will travel to Mto wa Mbu where you will overnight on a campsite.  Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 7 : Nairobi

After a leisurely breakfast, you will start your return trip to Arusha, where you will arrive around midday. You will be dropped off at  the airport for your flight (not included) to Nairobi).  On arrival into Nairobi International Airport, you will be met by a representative holding a sign-board with your name on it.  You will then be transferred to your hotel.

Day 8 : Selenkay Conservancy

You will be picked up from your hotel at approximately 06:00 hours and transferred to Wilson Airport for your light aircraft to Amboseli Adventure Camp, arriving at camp before lunch.  Following afternoon tea, you will either be escorted on a walk by Maasai warriors to a village to get an insight into their fascinating culture and way of life or take a game drive in the conservancy stopping for a sundowner at a scenic spot overlooking Kilimanjaro, followed by a night game drive to look for nocturnal animals such as aardvarks, serval cats, caracals, bat-eared foxes, African wild cats, and other species.  Return to camp for dinner.

Day 9 : Selenkay Conservancy

Awake to a dawn chorus of birds.  After an early breakfast, we depart for a full day of game-viewing in Amboseli National Park.  We drive through the bush on our private track into Amboseli National Park, for a full morning of game viewing.  Following a picnic lunch in the park, we return to camp later in the afternoon.  In the evening we have a sundowner, and return to camp for dinner, after which there is the option of a night game drive using a spotlight to seek out some of the nocturnal animals such as aardvarks, serval cats, bat-eared foxes among others.

Day 10 : Selenkay Conservancy

Morning and afternoon game-drives in Selenkay Conservation Area. The vehicles used are specially designed to be open-sided, for a proper safari experience. Masai warriors escort guests on a guided walk throughout the conservancy, where they can learn about the indigenous animals and flora which are used by the community. You will also have the opportunity to visit a local Masai village where you can experience local life in the community.  Sundowners are available with views of Mt Kilimanjaro too.

Day 11 : Ol Kinyei Conservancy

After breakfast transfer back to Nairobi by plane, then catch the afternoon flight to the Mara, arriving at 16:00 hours.  On arrival you will be met at the Naboisho airstrip and transferred to Mara Adventure Camp. Settle into your tent and enjoy lunch prepared by the camp chef.  Afternoon game drive in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy, with a sundowner at a scenic spot followed by a night game drive with spotlights to search for nocturnal animals, including the elusive leopards which are resident in Ol Kinyei Conservancy, before heading back to camp for dinner.

Day 12 : Ol Kinyei Conservancy
